In the annuals of famous speeches it was up there Neil. Welcome all to my last wrap of our inaugural Marist rowing season. As Neil so eloquently stated last Sunday, it has been a privilege for all of us to join with our sons to be part of such a strong Marist sporting community. And yes before I start tearing up (a quality that I am forever criticised for by my children) I am sure we all shared Neil’s sentiments as he summed up the season that was.

Before I dwell on the speech of the century, let me share with you all the afternoon celebrations that marked our wonderful season. Leah Kennedy had all of our boys marshalled, with hair combed, ‘pearly whites’ glistening and guns primed (ala Ron Burgundy) for their individual, group, and year photographs. With a classic autumn afternoon, back dropped by an iconic Canberra setting, the Marist boys in the immortal words of Madonna’s stopped to ‘strike a pose’, none more than our head coxswain and funny guy, Charlie Waldren. The group photo in particular, which included our rowers, coaches and committee members will be one to cherish.

Regattas and war games

A fun regatta ensued with teams being divided under the guidance of our captain, Hugh Cowan, and vice-Captain, Ed Hallissey. All rowers, coaches (Dick, Simon, Michael, Matt, Neil and Jane) and our parents, super Manager, Deb Jeppesen and dad Tim Mason displayed their rowing wares….. of various vintages and fitness levels. It was wonderful to see:

Thank you to our supportive CRC President Brendan Proust for officiating and our ‘super sub’ tinnie man, Steve McDougall for your assistance. The overall winning team was the red gang steered by our Captain Hugh.

The attention then turned to our gladiator corner where Neil challenged the fitness levels of our boys (the prize of a lindt gold bunny always brings out the big guns). It was amusing to watch the level of intensity and concentration despite the range of distractions. Year winners included:

Year 12 – Ed Hallissey and Hugh Cowan
Year 10/11 – Nat Smith and Lochie Rebetzke
Year 9 – Charlie Waldren and Brendan Clark
Year 8 - Jack Freebody and Hugo Webster.

Yummy food

The crowd were then lured by the tempting culinary delights on offer. Whatever awards were won on the water this season, few challenges can be thrown out to the Marist families in the food stakes. Thank you all to those who cooked, catered, and cleaned under the coordination of Carolyn Dunphy. Your efforts were all much appreciated. There are too many mentions for my master chef awards so please all take a bow (please note my rowing pun).

Speeches

As hinted earlier, the evening was concluded with a moving series of speeches. Neil Smith reflected on our humble beginnings on a cold August afternoon last year. We were reminded of the journey that included (once again ) food support by parents, the swimming tests, the rowing camp, Zootie fashions, and most importantly the comittement shown by our boys, committee, coaches and support members.

Neil particularly thanked our partners and supporters at Canberra Rowing Club who were present with us for the afternoon. In summary, Neil welcomed all to the Marist AGM which will be held during August and encouraged all parents to be involved as either committee members or injecting their talents on sub committees.

CRC President, Brendan Proust thanked all boys for their concentration and commitment to the sport of rowing. He reminded the boys that as a race official he was impressed with their race discipline given their limited time in the sport. Brendan encouraged all rowers to strive to attain First VIII status …..”afterall the game of rugby played in heaven is for those that missed out on the VIII”…. (Dunphy and AFL families we will translate that for you another time).

Our Rowing Captain, Hugh Cowan graciously thanked CRC, parents and boys for their support and commitment over the season. Once again thank you Hugh and your senior rowing team for being great ambassadors to all the rowers.

A special vote of thanks was delivered to our rowing Manager, Deb Jeppesen who is standing down from her role. In front and behind the camera, Deb's work has been invaluable, her passion, drive and commitment to making Marist rowing happen has been second to none. Thank you Deb.

Presentations:

Our sole medallists from our First ACT Championships: Under 15 Quad scull Bronze Medallists: Year 8 James McDougall, Patrick Dunphy, Hugo Webster, Mitchell Colbert, Coxswain: Brad Spackman.

The inaugural Most Improved perpetual trophy winner was Stephen Hancock (Year 9). Without a doubt this award received the loudest applause and was accompanied by a moving testament to the effort, hurdles, and application Stephen displayed during the season. Congratulations Stephen.

Each rower was then presented in year groups with a pennant and an individual trophy.

As I conclude my final wrap for the 2010/2011 rowing season, hoping I earned my ‘Koko Black’ treaty, it has been a pleasure to write about the achievements of our boys, and yes at times their parents, probably unaware, provided just as much entertaining material. The family connections have been a highlight and ones which I am sure will carry the momentum over the winter sports and into next rowing season including a sip or two at the Blue and Blue ball?

The College’s newest sport continues to grow in enthusiasm and structure. Marist Rowing has captured the minds and bodies of boys and parents alike. The committee thanks the tremendous response which has seen 50 boys registered. This number has capped the capacity of the club in its inaugural season thus no further registrations can be accepted. The committee encourages boys to place rowing on their priority list for next summer sporting season. It is envisaged that further capacity will be available next season allowing the number of boys able to row increase.

Head Coach Neil Smith, with his able coaching assistants have developed a training structure which will be fully implemented week commencing 10 November 2010. Each Year group has now been aligned with coaches and coordinators, coupled with assigned training days.

Mr Simon Dunphy has put the boys through their fitness paces, giving them an insight into the physical demands of rowing. The winter sport coaches will be very pleased with the fitness levels developed by the rowing squads.

On Sunday 24 October 2010, 42 of the Marist Rowers pounded the streets of Yarralumla and Deakin en route to Canberra Girls Grammar School aquatic centre where they were put through a series of mandatory water safety skills. With testing completed, the boys returned to CRC, a tad damp but relieved for the downhill run home.

Marist rowing is most grateful for the generosity of the staff of the CGGS aquatic centre for not only providing the facility but donating their time in conducting the water tests.

The Marist rowing committee thanks all parents, and their new partners at CRC for their continued support in ensuring our young men have a fabulous introduction to the sport of rowing. Welcome to the inaugural rowing season for MCCRC. From the initial discussions in February between a few keen parents we have evolved into a club with a committee of volunteers. We have had an overwhelming response to rowing with 80 students expressing interest and attending initial training sessions. Please show patience with the committee as we develop procedures and training for a group 4 times the size of what we expected! Please also show your appreciation where possible to the Canberra Rowing Club who have offered the use of their facilities and who are giving their time to coach and encourage junior rowing. They also did not expect such a response!Rowing Season

The rowing season will commence for Marist College in mid October and will finish at the end of March after the final regatta. Rowers competing in regattas during summer must keep every second Saturday morning free until about 1:00pm. Students may have an opportunity to compete over the winter period but crews will be determined in Term 1.

Fees

Fees for the season include student membership to Canberra Rowing Club (CRC), ACT rowing affiliation, coaching, the use of the CRC equipment and facilities, and insurance.

Fees do not include competition uniform or competition entry fees (approximately $7 per seat per race in regattas).

Training Times

Training will be held from Monday through to Friday with each rower having a minimum of 2 training sessions. These will be allocated by the Rowing Coordinator and Head Coach according to coach and boat availability.

Training will be before of after school depending on coach availability. Most training sessions will initially be held in the afternoon. Transport may be available in the afternoons from school to the sheds but is still to be advised. Otherwise a parent roster for transport or local bus transport is likely.

A Rowing Coordinator (RC) will be supervising on land and in some instances in coach’s boats during the training sessions. A coach will be with students on the water at all times. One coach will be allocated one crew while students are beginners.

Training will also include land-based fitness such as ergo training, swimming sessions, running and strength training. The MCCRC are planning to include individualized training from fitness experts in addition to the rowing training – such as core strength training in one off sessions.

Parents must collect their child from the rowing sheds by the scheduled finish time. Supervision is not guaranteed after this time.

Crews

Crews will be allocated by the Rowing Coordinator and Head Coach. Allocation will depend on overall fitness, size of the student, cohort and rowing ability. Crews assigned initially are likely to include members of the student’s friendship group to make learning to row most enjoyable for all students. For competition, the boys may be selected to row in alternative crews who will train together prior to regattas. Students will be encouraged to try competition but it is not a requirement for membership.

MCCRC have access to boats for crews of 4 or 8. The younger age groups will train predominantly in fours, with some work in eights. The older age groups may train in eights more frequently. Once again this will depend on coach availability.

Competition

MCCRC will enter crews in upcoming regattas. Please indicate on the rowing enrolment form if your student will not be participating in the regattas as this will assist in crew allocation.

Uniform

Uniform for rowing in regattas is the zootie. This will be available for purchase through the Marist College Uniform shop at around $75. Final pricing is to be determined and you will be advised when these are available for purchase.

Volunteers

MCCRC requires parent volunteers to assist the club to operate effectively. Please give consideration to how you can best assist. The following list gives you an idea of what is required. We are open to additional suggestions.

Coaches/Assistant Coaches/Tinny driver

Rowing training water and land based

 Tinnie drivers

 Provide resources such as rowing training handouts

 Swimming coaches to train boys in boat capsize drills

 Swimming coaches to train 100m clothed swim

Rowing Coordinators RC

This is a key role for the club and will assist the coaches by ensuring that crews are ready to row when the coach arrives. The RC will ensure that absent or sick students are replaced by other rowers to enable the crew to train. It is expected the role will be similar to that of a sporting team manager with a finite number of boys to be responsible for. The commitment would be for one morning or afternoon per week with the same group of boys (including your son). The RC does not need any prior rowing knowledge.
